A Reason To Remember

A few weeks ago I was invited to a Holocaust Remembrance Day. The commemoration was both insightful and touching. Activities included the singing of Jewish songs and “America the Beautiful.” An essay recited by a very perceptive eight grader keenly accentuated the necessity of that special day. But the most gratifying moment for me was seeing one of the survivors face to face. Dr. Oscar Haber survived the atrocity from decades ago and was the connective link from that dark past to the brighter present. I had the privilege to be photographed with him.
At 102 years old the survivor from Poland is still going strong. Freedom has allowed his life to stretch far beyond the tragedy that befell many of his fellow Jews. Dr. Haber remains as a beacon of hope for today and a reflection of history that gives us a reason to remember.
